Default Tested: D3 FPS

  • 388.36 Descent3 v1.4
    307 Min
    563 Max
    387 Second 1
    558 Second 2
    563 Second 3
    341 Second 4
    307 Second 5
    345 Second 6
    378 Second 7
    318 Second 8

This is on my current gaming setup that runs BF and CoD4: An Asus A7N8X-X motherboard, 1.5 GB RAM, AMD 2800+ overclocked to 3200+, and an XFX 7900GS AGP video card which comes from the factory overclocked with a lifetime warranty.

The 558 FPS during second #2 is awesome.

Command line arguments for FPS testing: -framecap 0 -novideo -nointro -nosound -nonetwork -timetest secret2.dem

I did note almost a 100 FPS difference when testing -framecap 0 vs. -framecap 999, with -framecap -0 consistently scoring higher on my system.

Again, I had to run this with version 93.71 of the NVIDIA video drivers. D3 will not run using OpenGL with anything after 93.71 and defaults to a very slow, flickering 60 FPS, even with VSync turned off.

Those of you with dual cards are encouraged to please experiment with VSync and refresh rates.

How many {WC} remember trying to break 60, 70, 100 FPS?

Oh, since I still use an AGP card I also tested BF and CoD4 with the newest drivers. No perceiveable difference other than the newer drivers report the OpenGL version differently compared to the 93.71 drivers which prevent DOOM and DOOM 2 from running and force D3 to run using GOD-awful super-sluggish DirectX.

Update: resolved an issue with OpenGL drivers on my system. D3 now runs on the latest drivers.

In the D3 setup, Misc. tab:
Code:
-framecap 0 -novideo -nointro -nosound -nonetwork -timetest secret2.dem
Click play and it will run the benchmark. Look in your D3 directory for fps.txt, that file will have your min, max, avg and FPS for each second the benchmark test ran.

This was on low settings in the D3 launcher with all Nvidia video settings set to performance. Looks like crap but boy is it fast.
Quote:
487.80 Descent3 v1.4
385 Min
646 Max
497 Second 1
646 Second 2
509 Second 3
405 Second 4
450 Second 5
494 Second 6
Asus A7N8X-X mobo, 3 GB RAM, AMD Athlon 2800+ CPU O/C'd to 3200+ (200 MHX FSB), Nvidia GeForce 7900GS (Fastest AGP card ever made).

Highest settings in D3 launcher, Nvidia settings set to performance:
Quote:
362.72 Descent3 v1.4
282 Min
576 Max
325 Second 1
448 Second 2
576 Second 3
401 Second 4
282 Second 5
334 Second 6
336 Second 7
325 Second 8
313 Second 9
Low launcher, High Quality Nvidia:
Quote:
472.42 Descent3 v1.4
373 Min
586 Max
489 Second 1
586 Second 2
524 Second 3
391 Second 4
447 Second 5
485 Second 6
Highest launcher, High Quality Nvidia:
Quote:
354.55 Descent3 v1.4
271 Min
537 Max
316 Second 1
431 Second 2
537 Second 3
431 Second 4
271 Second 5
317 Second 6
322 Second 7
355 Second 8
284 Second 9
Note that there's only about 10 FPS difference between the "performance" and "quality" settings for the video card. The biggest difference is from the system settings in the D3 launcher. With everything set to maximum I get up to 166 FPS peak in-game (single player). Will repost after swapping motherboards later this week. Will be upgrading to an Asus AV8-X with an AMD 64 3700+ chip, stock speed initally. O/C might be in it's future...

Well, the 7900GS was killed by a graphic bug in Eve Online quite some time ago (smoked ).

However a CPU upgrade for CoD W@W and a fallback to a 7800GS yielded these test results:

All CPU/graphics settings at the lowest possible:

883.90 Descent3 v1.4
668 Min
1176 Max
1176 Second 1
772 Second 2
881 Second 3

All CPU/graphics settings at maximum:

615.69 Descent3 v1.4
427 Min
851 Max
851 Second 1
795 Second 2
492 Second 3
599 Second 4
520 Second 5

I did have to add -fastdemo to the command line as -timetest no longer ran without forcing vsync to on.

Sometime before the end of the year I'll post results from my new gaming laptop which has an Intel Core 2 Duo running at 2.26 GHz and a GeForce 9800M GTS 1GB (dedicated, not shared like low-end stuff) VRAM video card.

With that much fps, I wonder how fast you could kill someone with the Vauss or Omega Cannons. Seeing how both speed up with higher framerates, don't ask me why.

Only the Omega did that. The vauss had a max-fire rate. If your shi... um... system, wasn't up to spec, the gun slowed.

Remember popping people with the omega going through walls?

BTW, still working on getting D3 loaded on the lappy.
